42-The Lake
At the end of the Belnem district is dive site 42 – The Lake is one of the most special dive sites on Bonaire. It’s easily accessible, with plenty of parking and a comfortable entry that lets you get into the water quickly and without worry.
Despite its name, The Lake is not actually a lake. Beneath the surface, you’ll find a wide expanse of sand surrounded by a vibrant coral reef teeming with life and color.
The first reef is relatively shallow, making it perfect for Open Water divers who want a relaxing dive and a chance to get familiar with the coral and the underwater world. The second reef lies deeper and presents a greater challenge, making it ideal for Advanced Open Water divers looking for a more adventurous experience.

💡Personal advice💡
- I use the large staghorn coral patch as a natural reference for every dive. If you swim straight ahead at 240° relative to the shore, you will find this patch on your right-hand side.
- For open water divers: This dive is enjoyable on the first reef. You start by swimming against the current and, halfway through, return to the staghorn patch via the shallower area. Once you reach it, use your compass to navigate back to shore.
- for advanced open water divers: There is a very nice route starting at the same staghorn patch. From there, you can follow The Lake underwater. Be very mindful of your air supply if you want to complete the full loop. If air is a concern, you can cut the dive short by heading east to the first reef halfway through. From the first reef, continue your route back to the staghorn patch.
